Lesson Learned

Lessons learned today:

1. Do not run a race- even a 5K- when you have not run more than 5 miles since October.
2. Do not sign up for a February race in DC!

This morning we ran the "Love the Run You're With" 5k. It was supposed to take place on Valentine's Day, but this is what we were dealing with then:

"Snomageddon 2010"

Needless to say, the race was postponed until today. There are still piles of snow everywhere, and it is still cold but not too brutal. The best part of the race was that the starting line was right down the street from where we live. We walked over 10 minutes before the gun.

I am embarrassed to admit that I was sucking wind after about a mile and the rest of the race was spent with me trying to get a full breath without much success. I had faith in my endurance, but it let me down. I don't think it will be too hard to build back up quickly, but running a race after 4 months of (inexcusable) winter sedentary-ness was not the best idea I have ever had. I somehow still managed to finish in 30:28 even with walking for a little bit. The wind picked up after we finished, so we didn't stick around too long.

Looks like I need to start running more often before I sign up for any more races!

I am disappointed that your newly acquired gear did not get a shout out on your blog.
